Embark on an enchanting exploration of Druids Temple nestled amidst Yorkshires picturesque landscape. Unravel the mysteries and myths around this stone circle as we delve into its fascinating legends, construction theories and significance.

Location

Druids temple is located near Ilton a small village in Ripon, North Yorkshire. The ruins of the temple are actually nestled within the stunning and picturesque grounds of the Swinton Estate. The Swinton Estate also care for and maintain the grounds. 

Parking and Access

There is a car park located near Swinton Bivouac and they ask for a small fee via their honesty box. Swinton Bivouac is actually an estate with camping grounds and an on-site cafe for visitors of the Swinton Estate. The roads leading to the car park are very narrow and tight so do take caution when navigating to the car park.

The walk to Druids temple is actually only a short 10 minute walk from the carpark and is really easily accessible via a footpath. And there is so much more to explore, the temple is surrounded by greenery and monuments. The whole surrounding landscape which is accessible via various walking trails has a sense of mystery and wonder with is just magical.

Amenities

Other than the Swinton Bivouac, there isn’t much else close by. However Swinton Bivouac has a range of amenities. They have camp grounds that feature tree lodges and yurts. There is also a cafe on site that offers a range of breakfasts, lunches and cakes to fuel your adventures! The estate that surrounds Druids Temple is also perfect for a picnic, so if its a sunny day be sure to take your picnic blanket! 

Interesting Facts 

  • Although the temple appears ancient, it was actually only built 200 years ago by an eccentric estate owner.
  • The estate owner wanted to helped tackle unemployment so hired local workers paying them a shilling for the day for their Labour to help build his very own little stone circle style temple.
  • There are many tails a theories of the temple that give it its mystical sense.
  • Although its seems like it has a rich history, it actually doesn’t and to be honest, no one really knows much about it.
  • The stone circle is made up of various stacked stones, cairns and chambers that give it an ancient feel.
  • One key feature is what looks to be a stone dining table.  

Our Opinion

We absolutely love visiting strange and curious things nestled within nature and this was exactly one of those! We would definitely suggest you add this one to your adventure list. Its great for everyone to wander and explore the landscape and get encapsulated in its mystery. Kids would just love it! 

Druids temple seems hidden deep away from the bustling world, making it truly the perfect place to relax and explore with nature.
